Innovation in vascular surgery for WNY
Dr. Joseph Anain, Sr., MD, FACS, a pioneer in vascular surgery in Western New York, started the first angiography suite at Sisters Hospital in 1967. His innovations included performing percutaneous selective catheterization directly into the blood vessels and placing the first implantable peripheral stent into a patient in Western New York.
In 1999, Dr. Anain performed the first FDA-approved endoluminal aortic stent graft in our area for the treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. That year, Dr. Anain’s son, Paul Anain, MD, FACS, joined his practice. Together, they created Catholic Health’s first carotid stent program for carotid artery disease at Sisters Hospital.
They’ve performed nearly 1,000 endoluminal stent graft procedures to date and are recognized among the top 3% of vascular surgery practices nationally.
